Host Families

The Joplin Jailbirds Host Family program

Joplin Jailbirds Host Family Mission

As host families for the Joplin Jailbirds, we believe every Jailbird deserves more than just a place to stay - they deserve a home away from home. We are committed to creating a positive experience filled with support and encouragement, while building meaningful relationships with the players that will often last a lifetime. Our goal is that when the player heads back home, they leave feeling not only like a part of a team, but even more like a part of the Jailbird baseball family.

FAQs

How long is the hosting commitment?

Typically the season runs from the last weekend in May until the end of July. Players may arrive at the beginning or middle of the season, as well as leave early due to injury or school commitments.

What housing must I provide?

A clean private bedroom with a regular bed and linens/blankets, bathroom access with towels, laundry access (you are not responsible for their laundry), kitchen access, and a parking spot if they have a car.

Players will also need to be able to get into the house late at night. A key, garage door opener or keycode is recommended.

Do I need to provide transportation?

No. Most players bring their own car or carpool with teammates. If your player does not have a car it will be up to him to get a teammate to come pick him up.

Am I responsible for meals?

We just ask that you have an open fridge policy for your player and have it stocked with food for breakfast, lunch and snacks. Additionally, when the player has an off day, we encourage you to include them in family meals. Communicating with your player about what they would like to eat is best, but having a variety of proteins and healthy carbs available for them is helpful.

Can I host more than one player?

Yes! Many families do if space allows. Coordinators often pair college teammates or players from the same hometown to make the settling-in process more comfortable.

Is there any compensation?

While this is a volunteer program, host families receive benefits such as 2 season passes, 10% discount on Joplin Jailbirds merchandise, host family recognition during home games, and a lifelong relationship with your ball player (and their family).

What house rules apply?

Your house means your rules. Discuss them openly upon arrival. Players are expected to be polite, respectful and clean. They also MUST ask your permission for any guests. Ask them to communicate well with you, but also feel free to let us know if there are any conflicts or issues that you would like addressed by the coach or GM. They will be more than happy to help.

Should I contact a player before they arrive?

Yes! We will provide you with the players' contact information. Reach out as soon as you have been matched to introduce yourself, discuss arrival logistics and start building rapport. Coordinators can help if responses are slow.

What if I have a vacation planned or need to be away?

It is up to you whether you allow your player to stay in your home while you are gone or not. You will know very quickly if you are comfortable leaving them for an extended time. If you aren't comfortable with that, then please notify the coordinator as early as possible. That way we can arrange temporary housing, so the player isn’t uprooted unexpectedly.

Do I have to attend games or events?

No. You will be provided with 2 season passes, but attendance is completely optional.
